Materials Needed:
- One "fat quarter" of solid white or off-white
fabric (a fat-quarter is a quilting term
for an 18"x22" rectangle of fabric).
- All purpose thread to match fabric
- Artist Gesso
- Acrylic craft paints in ecru, rust, ochre,
dark brown and orange.
- Polyester stuffing
- 1" Foam or Flat brush
- Black permanent marker
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Hand Sewing Needle
- Pinking Shears
- Piece of card-stock paper
- Pencil
Directions:
- Draw a candy corn shape of the desired
size on the card stock. A simple triangle
with rounded edges about 4"x5" works beautifully.
Cut out the pattern. (Figure A)
- Trace the candy corn shape as many times
as possible on the doubled piece of white
fabric. Here we have been able to fit 6
corn shapes on one doubled piece of fabric.
(Figure B)
- Pin the two layers of fabric together
inside each corn shape. Using the all purpose
thread, stitch along the marked outlines
of each corn shape, leaving a 1-½" opening
at the bottom of each shape for turning.
- Cut out the shapes using the pink shears,
trimming close to but not through the stitching
line. (Figure C)
- Turn the shapes right-side out through
the opening left at the bottom of each
corn and push out the corners. (Figure
D)
- Stuff with fiberfill and hand-stitch
the turning openings closed by hand using
the needle and all purpose thread. (Figure
E)
- Coat both sides of each corn shape with
gesso using the paint brush and allow the
shapes to dry thoroughly. (Figure F)
- Using the craft paint in the rust, ochre,
ecru and orange, visually divide each corn
shape into thirds and paint a strip of
a different color in each third of the
corn shape. Paint the front sides of each
corn to match the back sides. Let the paint
dry. (Figure G)
- Mix the dark brown paint with a bit of
water and antique the corn shapes along
the seam lines and along the area where
two colors of paint meet on each third
of the corn. Allow to dry. (Figure H)
- When each corn shape has dried thoroughly,
draw dashed lines along the paint lines
to give them a little extra character.
This step is optional. (Figure I)
